KXRMA: A Hazy IPA That Feels Different (Because It Is)
At 27 South, we’ve always brewed with feeling. Not just for flavour, but for the full experience - the mood, the moment, the memories. And with KXRMA, we’re taking that idea somewhere new. Somewhere a little experimental. A little playful. And honestly, a little bit out there.
KXRMA is a beer that doesn’t just taste good, it feels good. And not in the usual “I’ve had a pint and now I’m smiling” kind of way. We’re talking about a beer that’s been gently nudged by science to steer your state of mind.
So what is KXRMA?
At its core, KXRMA is a 7.0% Hazy IPA - soft, juicy, and absolutely humming with hop character. We’ve DDH it with kiwi heavy hitters Motueka, Riwaka, and Nelson Sauvin Quantum Brite, then layered in Amarillo Quantum Brite for a citrusy lift. Expect lime, white grape, spicy passionfruit and serious tropical skaze. Like all our hazy beers, it’s bright, lush, expressive, and built to shine.
But that’s kinda just the beginning.
We’ve taken six kegs of this same base beer and spiked five of them with something called Abstrax AI Terp Effects - a new kind of terpene technology that’s flavourless, scentless, and designed to gently guide your mood. Each keg is tuned to a different emotional frequency:
- Energised – For when you want to feel switched on and ready to move.
- Focused – For clarity, calm, and getting in the zone.
- Inspired – For sparking ideas and chasing creative tangents.
- Peaceful – For grounding, softening, and slowing down.
- Relaxed – For letting go and leaning back.
And of course, there’s a baseline beer - no terp effects dose, just the beer in its pure, radiant form.
Wait, terpenes? AI? What the heck is going on here?
Great question. Here's the short-ish answer: Abstrax Tech is a California-based company doing some pretty wild and (we think!) wonderful things with terpenes - the aromatic compounds found in plants like hops and yes, cannabis. But instead of focusing on flavour or aroma, they’ve used cutting edge machine learning and sensory science to create terpene blends that influence how you feel. Yep, your moods!
These blends are completely neutral in taste and smell, but they interact with your body’s receptors to promote specific moods - like alertness, calm, or creativity. They’re already being used in functional beverages and wellness products around the world, and now, for the first time (as far as we know), in an Aussie indie beers.
We didn’t partner with Abstrax or their local distributor Bintani, we’re just early adopters, curious brewers with a love for the weird and wonderful. We saw the potential, and we thought: what if beer could be more than a flavour? What if it could be a feeling too?
Where can I find it?
We’ll be pouring a couple of the KXRMA variants at our Coorparoo taproom, but the rest are heading out into the wild. We’ve sent individual kegs to a handful of venues around Brisbane - each one with a different mood. So. if you’re the kind of person who likes to explore, compare, and chase down the full set… well, we’ve just given you a reason to go on a little adventure.
This is just the beginning. We’re not claiming to have all the answers, but we’re pretty freakin excited to be asking new questions. About what beer can be. About how it can make us feel. And about where this strange, beautiful intersection of craft and chemistry might take us next.
One beer. Six states of mind. Come find yours.
